Good and Bad Postcards: How to Tell the Difference

woman considering good and bad postcards

You may be an expert in your field, but maybe marketing isn’t “your thing.” Although you can see the slightest change in a tooth, you can’t tell the difference between a good and bad postcard. Direct mailers are more than just fluff mail that gets thrown away immediately. They are powerful tools that can help you bring in more patients and profit. So how can you know that you’ve got an effective postcard? Keep reading to find out!

Good Postcards

Some elements of an effective postcard may seem obvious, but you’d be surprised at how often they are forgotten or overshadowed by unnecessary design choices. These essentials include an eye-catching title, your office’s contact information (i.e., address, phone number, website, email address), and special offers as well as their expiration dates. As an added bonus, you could consider putting a patient or customer review on the postcard, which gives the reader more peace of mind in choosing you.

From a design standpoint, you need to choose photos or graphics that support your message. For instance, you could include a photo of the dentist or owner of the business. You could use stock images of happy clients or patients, or you could use some of your before/after photos to show the improvements you can make! Selecting colors that pop is another great way to highlight certain information and capture readers’ attention.

Bad Postcards

Even if a postcard “looks good to you” aesthetically, this is just one opinion. It doesn’t mean that your postcard will be effective in reaching a wider audience. If you want to appeal to a larger group and create a postcard that will garner higher conversion, you need to make smarter design choices.

For instance, even seemingly attractive color combinations (such as gray and yellow) can be unappealing for a dentistry postcard. These colors are associated with tooth discoloration and subliminally give the target audience a bad impression of the practice.

When designing your postcard, especially if you are doing it yourself, you may want to make several iterations and test them out on your family and friends. Use their feedback to correct mistakes or tweak those elements for a better postcard. That’s what’s so great about working with a marketing firm—they already know how to use these elements to your advantage!

In the end, you don’t have to be a marketing expert to get a well-designed and executed postcard. When you have all the elements and you work with an experienced direct mail marketing team, you’re sure to end up with a postcard you can be proud of and additional revenue to prove it!
